  More info

Afrobeat, Sufi music, Indian Ragas and traditional African music all play a role in this mesmerizing brew that is both soothing and stimulating. New York residents, McAll, Roy and Cappadocia all enjoy successful careers. McAll plays with the likes of Gary Bartz, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Dewey Redman. Roy was the tabla player on such seminal recordings as Miles Davis' On The Corner and various Ornette Coleman Prime Time Recordings. Cappadocia, who plays a five-string cello of his own design, has performed with Odetta, Aretha Franklin and the Black Rock Coalition.

This unique ensemble has been performing in the USA and in Europe since 2002 to develop the rich, global sound of Vivid. Vivid also features African and Indian vocalists and world-Vivid is a collaborative CD with expatriate pianist Barney McAll, one of Australia’s finest jazz pianists who has enjoyed a successful New York-based career since 1999, is joined by tabla player Badal Roy (of Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman fame) and Rufus Cappadocia on five-string cello, also features Fred Wesley and various other leading jazz figures. There are many influences woven into a mesmerizing brew that is both soothing and stimulating.

'Barney McAll is a singular talent on the world stage. A few months after releasing his outstanding, highly personalised perspective on traditional Cuban music, Mother of Dreams and Secrets, he has expanded his horizons to embrace African and Indian music. What hits you, once again, is how thoroughly McAll has assimilated his source inspirations. He does not idly flirt with the different styles but marries himself to each and then produces unique offspring. His main collaborators here are brilliant cellist Rufus Cappadocia, playing a five-string instrument of his own devising, and veteran percussionist Badal Roy, famed for collaborations with Miles Davis, John McLaughlin and Ornette Coleman. Guests include former Fela Kuti drummer Jojo Kua and James Brown trombonist Fred Wesley. Despite the overt stylistic departure from the last album, there is one core similarity that is now a McAll trademark: a mesmerising quality permeating the music, whether it is atmospheric or more groove-based. This may well be one of the year's key releases.'
